Bill Rammell MP visits Harlow foodbank

  December 2009

Bill Rammell MP paid a Christmas visit to Harlow’s Foodbank on Wednesday 23rd December to congratulate staff and volunteers on their work this year providing emergency food for those in need.

Mr Rammell was keen to get a behind-the-scenes

and look at the successful initiative as figures indicate that of 21 local distributors the local MP has distributed the single largest number of vouchers to those in crisis this year.

The foodbank is a ground-breaking concept designed to help individuals and families in crisis by providing free emergency food until the appropriate agencies are in a position to assist. Tinned and dried food is collected from the public at supermarkets, churches, schools and other local groups and "banked" in a warehouse.

Food is then given to people in crisis as a result of referrals from professionals working in the front line.

The foodbank has supported 504 people with emergency food this year, including 212 children. 9.89 metric tonnes of food has been donated.

Mr Rammell said -

“I am delighted to be able to help with this initiative as I believe it provides a useful stop-gap for people who for whatever reason have found themselves without enough money to buy food for themselves and their families in the short term.

I would also like to say a big thank you to those people and organisations who have donated the food, and of course to the volunteers and staff at the foodbank who do such a good job and provide such an invaluable service.”
