GLOBALS Xchange Students
Sophie Hughes
and Uswatun Hasanah came to the Maybury Centre on a placement through a
volunteering scheme called
Global Xchange between the
UK
and Indonesia.

Below is their
personal testimony of working at the Maybury Centre -
When we first arrived at the Maybury Centre we didn’t know what to expect and we
were worried we wouldn’t fit in. However, everyone was so welcoming and we soon
felt at home there.
Each day is different, not only because of the
locations but also the variety of people you meet. The staff and
volunteers have really made an effort to include us in all of the activities.
Our role is to come alongside people by talking and playing games. We also help
in the kitchen, with the set up and put away and any other jobs that need doing.
It doesn’t really feel like work because it is so much fun and we have made a
lot of friends at the Maybury Centre.
We have had a lot of new experiences. I have been on the MRCT Chocolate
Run and Uswatun and I arranged a games afternoon with bingo and a dance called
‘Crazy Shark’.
We have learnt social skills, patience, new games, arts and
crafts, catering and Uswatun has learnt how to make a good sandwich.
Sophie Hughes &
Uswatun Hasanah
Gary Knott (Director of Community
Services) commented that
Sophie and
Uswatun have really made an impression on the staff and users of the Maybury
Centre and have both been so helpful in supporting the work of the charity.
MRCT
is delighted to be able to offer placements to Global Xchange students again
this year and the partnership has greatly benefited both organisations.
