Assistant Community Worker at Maybury Centre - St Pauls

by Sarah Blackaby

I am a local woman from Harlow with a husband and two children.  I enjoy anything to do with art or craft. I trained as a Wildlife Illustrator in Wales and have worked as a Graphic Designer for 10 years.

Challenged

Over the last 4 years I’ve felt increasingly passionate about getting involved in homeless work and service in the community.

After meeting Gary Knott, one of the founders of MRCT a few years ago, I joined the MRCT London CityAid team.

This year I felt God was challenging me to move out of my old job and to trust Him.  I gave in my notice earlier this year in April 2007 with no job to go to.  But before I had even worked my notice I had got my position at the Maybury Centre.

The Centre

Liz Bellworthy and all the brilliant Voluntary Assistants have really helped me to settle in quickly. It’s been 6 months now and I love the work.

There is a real family atmosphere.  It’s great to see people from different walks of life interacting and caring for each other week to week.  It’s a very special place for many different reasons.  Some come for company, some to share problems, some for hot food and warmth or just a place to meet up with friends.

No two days are ever the same.  Every week new people arrive and it’s great to be able to link these people up to regular visitors.

All I know is that I miss it when I’m not there!
