Why 'The Maybury Centre'?

The questions is often asked - "Why is it called the Maybury Centre?"

It has been named after a remarkable man, Bill Maybury.

Bill was loved and respected for his wise counsel and gentle manner.  He loved Harefield Church and its people, where we started, but due to Parkinsons Disease in later life, was restricted to undertake his responsibilities except to regularly pray.

On January 16th 1998, at the age of 83 Bill was called to be with the Lord he served so faithfully during his lifetime.

As a tribute to Bill, we named 'The Maybury Centre' after him, and will strive to achieve the commitment and values that were such an important part of his daily life.

Charles William Maybury, known as Bill to all his friends, was born in Limerick, Ireland and he grew up in Dublin and later Belfast, Northern Ireland.  He spent most of his working life with Joseph Rank Limited which became RHM after various mergers.

He was a keen church worker for all of his adult life at his church in Belfast – Victoria Memorial Hall.  The buildings had formerly been built as a music hall and were acquired by the church to use as their facilities.

He became superintendent of the large Sunday School and was responsible for the teaching and staffing of the many classes.  He always had a burden for youth work and was the founder of a children’s outreach on Friday evenings known as “Happy Hour”. After his marriage to Ruth in 1949, he was appointed as a leader of the church.

In 1962 he was transferred to the new offices of RHM in Harlow, Essex.

Bill’s standing in Victoria Memorial Hall, Belfast was such that, on moving to England, he was immediately appointed as an Elder (Church Leader)  of Harefield Church, a remarkable occurrence. He served Harefield until his death in 1998.

 1914 to 1998
